Visitors to Beaulieu enjoyed dressing up in Automotive Steampunk style throughout the summer holidays in specially created costumes in the museum. Children and adults were invited to pose for pictures in the outfits, sitting in the 1904 Pope-Tribune car, then share their images on social media.

A competition was also run to find the best Steampunk photo, which was won by Jenny Evans of Southampton. She took this image of her family in Steampunk costume when they visited Beaulieu in August. For her efforts Jenny won an annual family pass to the Beaulieu attractions.

A range of steampunk themed activities are taking place as part of the KEEP CALM and STEAM Ahead project.

Students from the Costume and Performance Design course at the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) created a collection of Automotive Steampunk costumes.  Each costume was inspired by some of the museum’s iconic vehicles and the students used the Motoring Reference Library’s rich source of mechanical and technical material to develop their designs. The stunning costumes were displayed in the Museum, alongside the cars that inspired them, throughout the summer holidays.

National Motor Museum staff took the opportunity to share outputs from the project at the Simply VW and Hot Rod & Custom events held during June. Children’s activities were provided with an Automotive Steampunk flavour and the local steampunk community turned out in force.

During August visitors to the National Motor Museum were able to take part in Creative Fun activities inspired by the project. Families enjoyed a range of activities exploring magical mechanisms on the theme of Automotive Steampunk.
