From the 1920s until the early 1950s, Nortons dominated racing throughout the world. In the Isle of Man the remarkable single-cylinder, overhead-camshaft engine bikes were especially successful. They finished first in every Senior and Junior TT from 1931 and 1938, with the exception of the 1935 Senior and 1938 Junior.
Market versions of the factory racers, the Manx models such as the one here were highly successful in the hands of private owners. The 350cc version was known as the 40M.
