The National Motor Museum holds over 100 linear metres of original, paper–based, archival material. This ranges from motoring”‘related personal correspondence and memorabilia, to company records and technical drawings. There is information about vehicles and accessories, manufacturers and designers, events and drivers.
Letters, photograph albums and scrapbooks reveal the achievements of famous 1930s racing and record‑breaking drivers like Eddie Hall, Goldie Gardner and George Eyston. From a later period, the John Gott Archive gives an insight into the activities of this talented racing and rally driver who reached his peak during the 1950s.
Company documents include the chassis records for Hampshire‑based Thornycroft, early order books and photograph albums relating to the coachbuilder Vanden Plas and advertising material for Scammell commercial vehicles. Early garage records give a small business view of the motor trade during the 1920s and 1930s.
Cataloguing the Motoring Archives is a continuing process; those items which have already been listed may be seen on the Access to Archives website, hosted by The National Archives, at www.a2a.org.uk.
