Toleman TG184

This car was driven by the great Ayrton Senna during the 1984 season, his first year in Formula One. The Rory Byrne designed TG184 featured a carbon fibre chassis and was powered by Brian Hart’s 415T turbocharged engine. By 1984 turbocharged engines were used by the majority of teams. This is Chassis 01, the early season spare car, raced by Senna at the Detroit Grand Prix.

Ted Toleman’s team made its Formula One debut in 1980, following success in the European Formula Two Championship. 1984 was their most successful season, Senna gaining two sixth places (in the previous season’s TG183B), a seventh, two thirds, and a dramatic, and controversial, second place in the rain at Monaco. The following year Toleman was sponsored by Italian clothing manufacturer Benetton and was taken over and renamed by them for the 1986 season.
