Moto Guzzi started building motorcycles in 1921, with their first twin cylinder machine appearing in 1933. The well known V-twin engine with in-line crankshaft layout was introduced from the mid-1960s.

The best selling 850cc Le Mans sports bike was first introduced in 1976. Subsequent development led to the Le Mans III, a more advanced bike built from 1981 to 1984, incorporating over 80 technical improvements compared with the interim Le Mans II. It was the first European motorcycle to meet stringent new US noise and pollution regulations. It was replaced by the Le Mans 1000 in late 1984.
