Perks simplified the problem of fitting an engine on a pedal cycle by introducing the motorwheel. It could take the place of the normal rear wheel of a bicycle or the front wheel of a tricycle.
In 1901, Singer acquired production rights. Among modifications was the fitting of a low-tension magneto, perhaps the first motorcycle engine to be so equipped.
About fifty years later, the motorwheel concept reappeared in the 35cc BSA Winged Wheel and the 30cc Cyclemaster.
