Written by Maurice A. Kelly this book makes a welcome addition to the reference library as it features a subject which has received little coverage in automotive history. The author spent some 30 years gathering information for the book including a prolonged visit to Russia in the 1970s and researching the archives of the Polytechnical Museum in Moscow. The result is a detailed study of the motor vehicle in Russia prior to World War I and provides data on steam, electric and military vehicles, motor cars, trucks and motorcycles. All the manufacturers of motor vehicles, military machines, certain accessories and even aero engines are covered in this well illustrated book together with information on pre-revolutionary coachbuilders. Published in June 2009 by Veloce Publishing with the assistance of the Michael Sedgwick Trust.

The Michael Sedgwick Trust was set up to commemorate the motoring researcher and author Michael Sedgwick (1926–1983) and encourages the publishing of new motoring research. Michael was previously Curator of the Museum at Beaulieu and latterly its Director of Research.
