The National Motor Museum is home to The Caravan Club Collection, which complements and expands the museum’s leisure motoring themed collections. Formed in 1907, The Caravan Club is Europe’s premier touring organisation, representing over one million caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tent owners.
Historic material was gathered for many years at The Caravan Club headquarters. In 2006 this Collection was transferred to the National Motor Museum’s Collections Centre. Since this time a Collections Officer and a small team of volunteers have been working to improve access and preservation. This work has led to numerous displays, exhibitions, publications and educational workshops which have showcased the Collection.
The Caravan Club Collection dates from the birth of leisure touring caravans in 1885 through to its Centenary Celebrations in 2007 and beyond. Material includes a variety of memorabilia, publications, photographs, film footage and sound recordings reflecting the history of its services and members.
The National Motor Museum features a dedicated caravanning area which includes the miniature Royal Caravan, a 1926 Eccles caravan and a 1964 Commer Auto-Sleeper motor caravan. These vans are displayed alongside a selection of memorabilia from The Caravan Club Collection.
You can also see a variety of Club material in The National Motor Museum’s High Days and Holidays display and by visiting our Caravan Road Rallying online exhibition.
The Caravan Club welcomes professional and amateur researchers to visit the National Motor Museum Collections Centre and access material which is not on public display. To make an appointment please contact The Caravan Club Collection Officer.
